About Mental Health Foundations for Carers

The Mental Health Foundations Interactive and web-pages are designed to support carers of someone with a mental illness by providing information and resources.

These web-pages provide links to resources and services. The Foundations Interactive provides information and insight into the caring role, and includes video interviews with other carers.

If you are a carer of someone with a mental illness, this resource sets out some of the issues you may face and the types of support you may need. The resource also provides practical tips on how to navigate the mental health system, how to look after yourself and effective communication techniques.

The web-pages and Foundations Interactive program aim to help you:

  • recognise that what you are going through as a carer is normal
  • see the bigger picture by exploring the six phases of caring
  • understand that other carers may be on the same journey
  • feel you are not alone
  • reach a place of purposeful coping
  • identify key resources and practical assistance that can help.

This resource will also help service providers understand carers' experiences and needs.

This engaging and interactive online resource is based on content developed for a two-day 'Foundations' workshop previously run by Carers NSW. The content has also been reviewed to ensure it is in line with the direction of mental health interventions in NSW.

You can access this online resource at any time – and you will get more out of it each time you revisit.
